Lactose intolerance

Lactose intolerance is more common than people think. Around 10 to 20% of the population in the BENELUX is lactose intolerant. But what does that actually mean? What are the symptoms of lactose intolerance? When do you know whether you are lactose intolerant? First of all, it is good to know that intolerance means that a specific substance is not tolerated well by the body. Lactose intolerance means that your body has an unusual response to food that contains milk sugar (lactose). This includes products such as milk and yoghurt. Lactose intolerance is often mistaken for a cow’s milk allergy. People with lactose intolerance cannot digest the milk sugar known as lactose properly, or cannot digest it at all. If someone has a cow’s milk allergy, this person is allergic to a protein found in cow’s milk. Cow’s milk allergy is particularly common in babies as their intestines are not yet fully developed, which means that they are, as yet, unable to digest cow milk.

Always first consult a dietician or GP. It is probably good to know that the tolerance for lactose is variable. We also recommend that you visit a dietician or GP to find out as much as you can about the role of lactose in food.

Lactose intolerance is hereditary. If it is prevalent in your family, you are also quite likely to have or develop this. A hydrogen breath test can be conducted to determine whether you are lactose intolerant. You can request such a test at your GP who will refer you to a gastroenterologist or internist.

Lactose intolerance – what can you do about it?

If you are lactose intolerant, it can sometimes be difficult to avoid products that contain lactose. In the summer, of course you will sometimes want to be able to enjoy an ice cream, or perhaps you’d like a cappuccino in the morning to start your day. For everyone who is lactose intolerant, but would still like to enjoy lactose-containing products every now and then, Kerutabs is a good supplement to your diet. Kerutabs contains the natural enzyme lactase. Lactase ensures that milk sugar is easily digestible, supporting the digestibility of lactose in milk and milk containing products. You can purchase Kerutabs online via this website or when you are living in the Netherlands or Belgium you can also buy it at your pharmacist. Read more information about lactase tablets.
